🧠 Book 4 is The Six Types of Working Genius by Patrick Lencioni
Core Concepts
The Six Types of Working Genius is a framework for identifying the distinct types of work related talents and understanding how they contribute to team dynamics. According to Lencioni, everyone has one of six key “genius types” that determines their role in a group project.
This framework focuses on how to best leverage individual strengths to create high-performing teams. The Six Types of Working Genius are:
Genius of Wonder (W): The ability to ask big questions, envision possibilities, and think about future opportunities. People with this genius tend to explore new ideas, initiate brainstorming, and challenge the status quo.
Genius of Discernment (D): The ability to evaluate ideas, recognize which ones are worth pursuing, and make decisions based on gut feeling and judgment. Individuals with this genius are often tasked with sorting through possibilities and choosing the best path forward.
Genius of Completion (C): The ability to execute and bring ideas to fruition. People with this genius take on tasks and work diligently to finish them, making sure things are completed and delivered as expected.
Genius of Implementation (I): The ability to drive projects forward and make sure things get done. These individuals tend to take responsibility for ensuring that initiatives progress, and they keep teams moving toward goals by managing timelines, deliverables, and obstacles.
Genius of Balance (B): The ability to consider the broader picture, balancing multiple factors to maintain harmony between various components of a project. People with this genius are adept at handling diverse viewpoints and aligning competing needs, often taking on roles that require mediation and compromise.
Genius of Innovation (N): The ability to continuously improve and evolve systems, processes, or ideas. These individuals enjoy tweaking, refining, and making changes that result in better outcomes, striving for continuous improvement rather than settling for status quo solutions.
My Take for You - The Why
The Six Types of Working Genius is an insightful read, especially for nurses and healthcare professionals navigating non-traditional or leadership roles. This framework fits nicely with the self-assessment that The Bold Nurse Academy helps you to complete before you begin a career transition.
For Bold Nurses, understanding your “working genius” is invaluable. This can help you identify the roles you’re naturally suited for and how to leverage your strengths in career transformation. Whether you are leading a team, transitioning to a non-clinical role, or exploring new career paths, knowing your strengths allows you to optimize your potential without trying to be something that you are not.
Through The Bold Nurse Academy, I help you apply similar principles to build authentic career pathways that honor your unique strengths and amplify your influence. The goal is to harness your inherent talents to create meaningful impact in new ways.
What You Might Find Useful: Key Takeaways from Book 4 & The Bold Nurse Academy
Understanding the six types of working genius can have a meaningful impact on your career growth, especially when making bold career transitions or stepping into leadership roles.
Know Your Genius: In Lencioni’s framework, every professional has one of six “geniuses” that define their natural contribution to a team. Understanding your genius type, whether you are a Wonder, Discernment, Completion, or Implementation type, helps you define your role in a professional setting. Recognizing your personal genius type helps you understand your natural contribution to teams and where you can most effectively add value, and is important to communicate in interviews!
Leverage Your Strengths in New Roles: The Bold Nurse Academy is built on customizing your strengths to maximize career impact. Whether you're leading a team, mentoring others, or transitioning to a different role, understanding your personal working genius gives you a strategic advantage. BNA provides you with tools to align your natural talents with your next career step.
Effective Collaboration: Lencioni’s model underscores the importance of collaboration between different genius types. At BNA, we focus on helping nurses transition into non-traditional roles, especially ones in which your leadership and team building experience are valuable. Understanding the strengths of your colleagues and how your genius fits into their workflows enhances team dynamics and productivity—something I see time and time again in the nurses I coach.
Streamlining Your Efforts: Career transition and reinvention often requires teamwork, whether in clinical or non-clinical settings. By using the Working Genius model, you can understand how to work more effectively with others—whether you’re collaborating with industry leaders or healthcare teams. BNA helps you find your flow through collaboration and effective delegation, so you don’t have to do it all alone.
By identifying which of the six genius types resonates most with you, you gain clarity about the natural talents that make you thrive in different settings. You are not expected to be all six, but recognizing your dominant type(s) can help you strategically focus your energy on the roles and opportunities that align best with your strengths. Think about it this way:
The Wonder genius might lead you to roles in innovation, strategy development, or vision casting.
The Discernment genius could make you a natural decision-maker, mentor, or strategic partner.
The Completion genius thrives in execution, project management, and operations.
The Implementation genius is perfect for driving teams forward, leading initiatives, or operationalizing plans.
The Balance genius is vital for stakeholder management, negotiation, or team cohesion.
The Innovation genius contributes to roles in process optimization, improvement initiatives, or product development.

Your Actionable Insight → Take One Small Step Today
Choose one micro-action for this week:
Identify your Working Genius: Reflect on your natural strengths. Are you the idea generator (Wonder)? Are you skilled at evaluating ideas (Discernment)? Or are you someone who takes action and completes tasks (Completion and Implementation)?
Connect with Others: Now that you know your genius type, seek out someone in your network or workplace who complements your strengths. If you're a Wonder, connect with a Completion person. If you're a Discernment type, collaborate with someone who can execute your ideas. The goal is to leverage your strengths and work collaboratively to create effective outcomes.
Start a New Project: Continue a project, start a task, project, or role that aligns with your working Genius and step into it to test your genius. These small efforts will reinforce the idea that work doesn’t have to feel hard when you are using your natural talents.
