As Seen on TV: The ABCDs of a BOLD Life & Career | Episode 2: Balance

Bow Johnson vs. Leslie Knope: Having it all

Welcome to The Bold Brief—

Who said you had to do it all or have it all?

If you have ever watched Black-ish, you know Dr. Rainbow “Bow” Johnson has a lot on her plate. She is a successful anesthesiologist, a mother, a wife, and often the person holding everything together while the Johnson family navigates another wonderfully chaotic situation.

Then there is Leslie Knope from Parks and Recreation.

Leslie is the kind of woman who would organize a community fundraiser, chair three committees, prepare a 200-page binder, and somehow find time to make personalized waffles for everyone involved.

And she would probably volunteer to do it again next weekend.

I love both of these characters. They are intelligent, ambitious, capable, and genuinely invested in the people around them.

But watching their stories raises an interesting question:

When does being capable become an expectation that we must always be available?

And that got me thinking about the ABCDs of a BOLD Life and Career.

Welcome to Week 3 of As Seen on TV: The ABCDs of a BOLD Life & Career.

Over the next few weeks, we are putting 8 unforgettable TV characters under the ABCD microscope.

Week 1 explored the ABCDs. Week 2, Cristina Yang and Moira Rose helped us examine Authenticity, including the difference between knowing who we are and allowing ourselves to become someone new.

Now, Week 3, we turn to B for Balance. And I suspect this one will feel familiar.
