So, bold by association…

The Bold Brief - Evidence-based success tips for a BOLD career and life.
⏪Rewind & ⏩Fast-Forward
Public speaking should be a tool to share your clinical experience, projects, research and over time, build a story about your passions both clinical and non-clinical.
In 2025, I challenged myself to improve my own public speaking with a focus on improving my (a) presence, (b) clarity, and (c) rate of speech. Session attendees need to be able to trust you, engage in as well as actually follow your session content … thus the need for my own public speaking goals on presence, clarity, and rate of speech.
So, for 2026, let’s say that I feel as though I have made improvements since 2 speaking events in 2024 and 2 in 2025, I still have lots of room to grow and build confidence for the future!
⏪REWIND to the Podium: The Power of Presence
Delivering a podium presentation (small or large) at an amazing conference makes most people nervous. To grow in my larger forum public speaking, I needed more experience.
I had the privilege of having an abstract accepted for a podium presentation at AMSN 2025 in Austin, Texas. This was a wonderful chance to share clinical insights, current research, and evidence-based strategies to improve urinary continence care for an audience of exceptional medical-surgical nurses.
What stood out more than my nervousness, the fixed podium & microphone (I prefer a lavalier/clip-on mic and to walks/talk), the last-minute stage change 🫠 was this:
The hallway conversations where “I’ve thought about submitting…” turned into “I’m ready to start.”
The lessons from attendees and colleagues that your visibility changes you and our profession.
The moment that each session attendee realized they belong up there too.
I have learned in my own speaking experience and in working with/supporting others, is that you do not need permission to submit for a podium or to lead. But sometimes, you do need a platform. Let’s look to the future …
