3 Phases of Strategic Networking
🎯 Before The Event: Prep for Impact
Set a Networking Goal Networking without direction is just socializing. Set a simple, clear purpose like:
“I want to meet 3 nurses in leadership roles in education or quality.”
“I will introduce myself to one speaker in my area of interest (e.g., virtual nursing care or cardiac nursing).”
Example: A palliative care nurse interested in transitioning to education will introduce herself to 2 nurse educators and attend an breakout on Palliative Clinical Care Transitions
Research Key People and Organizations. Review the conference program and make a short list of:
Speakers in your area of interest
Organizations with booths (employers, CE providers, tech vendors)
Association leaders (e.g., Board members, Committee leaders, Poster presenters)
Follow or connect with each on LinkedIn or comment on their posts before the event. Pro Tip: Commenting pre-conference increases the chance they’ll recognize your name badge or invite you into conversations on-site.
Craft Your USP

Practice saying it out loud and project your self to others with confidence.
Print or Prep Tracking Sheet/App (Any format)
Create a simple template with name, were we met, what we talked about and what I will follow up with.

🎯 During the Event: Be Curious, Visible, AND Valuable
Join Conversations, Don’t Wait for Them
Sit with someone new at every session, lunch, or mixer.
Use your curiosity to your advantage:
“What brings you to this session?”
“What’s been the most impactful takeaway so far?”
Example: A nurse attending your UI session strikes up a conversation afterward about EHR screening tools. You offer to connect them to your quality improvement contact—that’s instant value.
