Once a Med-Surg Nurse, Always a Med-Surg Nurse! Special Celebration

Celebrating the heart, hustle, and expertise of medical-surgical nurses everywhere.

Welcome to The Bold Brief—

This week, I am setting aside the As Seen on TV series for something close to my heart: Celebrating my fellow medical-surgical nurses.

Medical-Surgical Nurses Week!

Once a Med-Surg Nurse, Always a Med-Surg Nurse!

Throughout my career, I’ve worn a lot of professional hats: Clinician, Educator, Researcher, Executive, Consultant, and Entrepreneur. But no matter where my journey takes me, one identity remains my bedrock:

I am a Med-Surg nurse and I am fiercely proud of it.

Dr. Kristi R. Campoe, Ph.D., R.N., CMSRN, CPHQ, sMBA

Medical-Surgical nursing is not an entry point nor a stepping stone.

Medical-Surgical nursing the ultimate specialty and clinical training ground. It gave me more than rapid triage skills and multi-system medical knowledge. This specialty has given me lifelong friendships, extraordinary mentors, and the resilience to navigate any room that I step into.

I’ve stood shoulder-to-shoulder with nurses who could:

  • Make you belly-laugh during the hardest 12-hour shift of your life.

  • Catch a nano shift in clinical status before a lab result even posted.

  • Walk into a room and instantly calm a crisis with pure authority and grace.

These are the Med-Surg professionals I’m celebrating today!

💌 The 1-Person Challenge

Here is my challenge for you to complete this week:

1️⃣Reach out to ONE Med-Surg nurse who has made a difference in your career.

  • A preceptor who backed you up during your first code.

  • A colleague who made a brutal night shift manageable.

  • A mentor who saw your leadership potential before you did.

2️⃣Send them a quick text, DM, or email.

  • Tell them what their support meant to you.

  • The most powerful celebration we can offer is reminding someone that their impact lasted long after the shift ended.

  • AMSN has some pre-drafted texts/emails/messages of support here.

💬 Let’s Have Some Fun in the Comments!

Drop your answer in the comments or just reply to this email:

  • You know you’re a Med-Surg nurse when...__________.

  • My ultimate Med-Surg superpower is...__________.

  • Med-Surg nursing taught me how to...__________.

Be Funny. Be real. Be unfiltered because we have all had those shifts!

To every medical-surgical nurse, whether you are currently at the bedside, leading from the executive suite, teaching the next generation, or building non-traditional pathways:

I see you. I celebrate you. And I am proud to walk alongside you.

Happy Medical-Surgical Nurses Week!
