The Declaration of Clinical Independence

Declare Your Independence

Welcome to The Bold Brief—

This week, the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary. We will all look at the fireworks, light up the grills, and talk about the revolutionary spirit of 1776.

But as a nurse, I want you to look past the red, white, and blue for a second and look at the history.

  1. The American Revolution didn’t start because people woke up one day and decided they liked fighting.

  2. It started because an entire population was being taxed physically and financially without having any real representation, say, or authority in the systems governing their daily lives.

  3. It started because of systemic overreach.

Sound familiar?

Declare Your Independence

Every single day hospital-based direct care nurses, educators, managers, directors pay an unsustainable Empathy Tax.

You are taxed on your
  • sleep

  • physical safety

  • mental well-being

  • personal time.

The hospital administration happily collects this tax to paper over broken staffing models and structural chaos, all while giving you zero, or very little read representation when enterprise-level decisions are made.

If you are waiting for the system to vote to change itself, you are waiting on a miracle.

History has shown that true independence is never given.

True independence declared.

Are you ready to declare your own clinical independence?

This milestone 250th July 4th holiday should not just be a day off from your shift, or a change in your schedule. It needs to be the moment you look at your own professional life and ask the hard question: Are you ready to declare your own clinical independence?

Leaving the bedside is a strategic relocation of your talent.

  • You are far more than a unit or hospital-based worker.

  • You are a high-level logistics, crisis-management, and quality-assurance asset.

It is time to take your clinical genius to environments that actually respect your boundaries and pay you as you deserve so that you can have authenticity, balance, meaningful challenge, while maintain confidence and well being.
