“I know I need this change … so why am I not doing it?”

If you have ever asked yourself that question, you are not alone.

This is normal.

This week, we are learning about the resistance we all experience.

Resistance is the invisible wall of overthinking, self-doubt, and “what if” spirals that stalls reinvention even when the path is clear.

In this 4-part series, The Real Work of Reinvention, we are unpacking what real-life reinvention looks like for nurses, healthcare professionals, and other mission-driven experts. Start your bold, intentional shifts to reshape your own career without erasing everything you've built over time.

⬇️Resistance to Reinvention Looks like This⬇️

I asked current Bold Nurse Academy clients and graduates: What does resistance look like to you? Here is exactly what 13 people said:

  1. Fixating on unnecessary certifications before you plan your path

  2. Saying, “I’ll make a move after the next schedule”

  3. Endless job scrolling hours without having a relevant resume ready

  4. Telling yourself you need more clarity while ignoring opportunities in front of you

  5. Revising your resume for the 12th time without ever getting peer feedback on it

  6. Telling yourself you need to take another course even though you already have 3 degrees

  7. Writing a draft email to a professional contact who left the bedside and never hitting send

  8. Creating a list of dream roles and keeping it private

  9. Make excuses for a professional chat because “you’re not ready to talk about it yet”

  10. Avoiding your own questions like: “What do I actually want?”

  11. Re-reading job descriptions over and over convincing yourself you're "not quite qualified

  12. Stalling on goal setting because “life is too busy right now.”

  13. Defaulting to clinical overtime instead of planning a pivot

Resistance crept in and felt like logic.

Current Bold Nurse Academy (BNA) Student Feedback

“I kept thinking I needed more research before I could pivot into sales education.

But I was using ‘research’ as a delay tactic. I already had what I needed.

BNA helped me see that the hardest part wasn’t applying. The actual hardest part is unlearning the idea that I had to over-prove myself.

The Evidence

In my ABCD model of career transition, the D stands for “Driving Forward with Confidence” (Sept 4, 2024).

Confidence is more important than you think.1

Confidence is not a static personal trait. Instead, confidence evolves and deepens as you progress through different stages of your career. Understanding how your confidence shifts over time can help you leverage it more effectively, ensuring that you continue to grow and thrive in your professional journey.

Confidence does not arrive before you leap or when resistance abates.

  1. Confidence is built by first doing the hard thing scared

  2. Then, by recognizing resistance not as a stop sign, but instead a signal that you are on the edge of something meaningful.

  3. Take action to recognize these signals now before resistance stops you in your tracks.

Your Weekly Action

Name the Resistance

Now - Grab a sticky note (or the Notes app).

  1. Complete this prompt

    • “I am not taking action on ____ because I’m afraid of ____.”

  2. Now write a counter-statement

    • “If I take one small action of ____ , I will gain ____.”

    • Naming resistance shrinks its power.

    • Try it.

  3. Then, take 5 Steps to Maximize the Impact of Your Micro-Actions.

Name the Resistance Action - Example

"I’m not applying for the education liaison role because I’m afraid I’ll look underqualified."

➡️"If I take one small action like sending an intro email, I will gain clarity and confidence."

Learn more about micro-actions here because progress fuels motivation, consistency beats intensity, and, clarity reduces your overwhelm!

What’s Next?

Your next role won’t look like your last.

That’s the point.

We are closing this series with real-world examples of BNA current students and grads who are redefining success on their terms. They are leading, growing, and finally breathing again.
