Let’s get to work.

The Bold Brief - Evidence-based success tips for a BOLD career and life.

Have You Outgrown the Bedside?

You did not wake up one day and decide the bedside was not enough.
It happened slowly.
Almost quietly.

Tasks that once stretched you now feel automatic, mundane.
Shifts blur together.
You do the work well but part of you no longer feels in it.

You start to notice the signs:

╰┈➤ˎˊ˗You are still a great nurse, but you are not growing.
╰┈➤ˎˊ˗You feel restless, but not reckless.
╰┈➤ˎˊ˗You want more, but you cannot yet name what more is.

This is growth. But what is next and how do I get there?

What is next? How do I get there?

There comes a point when expertise becomes constraint
not because the work of an expert nurse no longer matters,
but because you have mastered it and there is no real intellectual challenge.

And now you are ready for new problems to solve.
New systems to improve.
New ways to use what you already know.

This is where it gets complicated.

You have spent years and, for many of you, decades building an identity around one kind of nursing …bedside, or hospital based nursing.
So when that identity no longer fits, it can feel disorienting. Like standing in fog.

❌You do not want to start over. No one does.
❌You do not want another credential just to stay busy. So much time and money.
❌You do not want to leave nursing … not really …
but you cannot pretend the bedside is where you belong anymore.

Here is what I wish someone had told me sooner:
✅ You are allowed to outgrow the bedside.

Outgrowing it does not mean abandoning nursing.
It means stepping into the next version of your career, authentic to who you are now.
The version that reflects your vast experience, vision, and current values.

You can still make an impact.
You can still care deeply about patients and team.
You can still be a nurse, even if your work no longer starts with your stethoscope.

If you are unsure what comes next, that is okay.
Clarity does not always come first.

Sometimes the decision to explore is what sets everything in motion.

You do not need a roadmap today.

You need permission to admit:
╰┈➤ˎˊ˗ I am ready for something more even if I do not know what it is yet.

That is not the end of your story. It is the beginning of a better one.

Why This Letter, Why Now?

This is the 5th in the series, An Epistolary for Nurses, written personally from me to you, the expert nurses navigating identity, leadership, and reinvention.
