Bold at the Frontline of AI - Part 3

Visibility

Welcome to The Bold Brief—

The future of nursing is being shaped by who understands AI. However, it is also being shaped by who can clearly communicate the value of clinical expertise inside increasingly technical, data-driven systems.

That distinction and its outcome matters more than most nurses realize.

  1. In Part 1 of this series, I introduced the growing power gap emerging as AI systems are integrated into healthcare environments without enough frontline nursing influence.

  2. In Part 2, Beyond AI Literacy, we discussed why AI literacy alone is not enough and why clinical authority must remain central to implementation, interpretation, and safety.

  3. Now, I want to discuss the next problem already emerging in healthcare innovation spaces.

Visibility.

Beyond The AI Gap and AI Literacy

One misconception in the nursing profession is the belief that our expertise naturally speaks for itself to others, outside of nursing. So, inside traditional clinical environments, this is often true. Experienced nurses quickly recognize strong clinical judgment, operational awareness, prioritization, communication, and leadership. These skills are visible because everyone in the environment understands their value.

Outside of traditional nursing environments, this changes rapidly.

In AI development, MedTech, MedDev, healthcare operations, implementation science, digital health, and innovation strategy, clinical expertise does not automatically translate itself. If nurses cannot explain the systems-level significance of their work and expertise, many organizations will reduce that expertise to tasks rather than strategic or financial value.

This underlying issue of communication and visibility are already happening. Let me give examples.
